NOT A CANDY | Round Wall Sculpture

A round textured wall sculpture, 17" across, 5" depth, handmade in California from upcycled newspaper, textiles, clay and plaster on a salvaged wood base. Only one exists. This piece will not be reproduced.

The trick

Everything about this piece tricks your expectations. The shape says candy shop. The surface says sculptor's studio.

You read it as something sweet and manufactured from across the room — a wrapped confection, a thing that came off a line. Then you get closer and the illusion falls apart in the best way. There's no gloss, no plastic, no machine edge. There's hand-layered paper and plaster, sanded and painted, holding fingerprints and small irregularities that no factory would allow through.

That gap between what you expect and what's actually there is the whole point. It's a joke you get slowly, and it stays funny.

What makes it one of a kind

• The texture shifts depending on the light. Flat and graphic at midday, ridged and shadowed in the late afternoon. A printed image of this shape would look identical all day. A round textured wall sculpture doesn't.

• Built from things that already lived a life. Upcycled newspaper and textiles, layered by hand with air-dry clay and plaster over salvaged wood, then painted. Upcycled, not recycled — the materials keep their history instead of being pulped back to raw stock.

• Nothing is molded or replicated. Each piece is built up by hand, and the drying between layers can't be rushed. When it's gone, it's gone.

• Arrives ready to hang on an included French cleat, which sits flush to the wall and holds the weight properly.
